a new kind of education…

Our production company is different because it aims to have a feature film that is made with majority young people, we want to offer a completely new style of education which is a middle ground between university and working in the industry. We want to look at alternative ways of filmmaking from mobile phones to 16mm film, making films far removed from the mainstream. Using the normal structure and hierarchy of the film industry but with some room for people to present their idea’s, working as a collective. We also look at alternative ways for distribution, for our last film we did pop up screening’s in boxing gyms and our next film will have pop up screenings in music festivals. These will all be arranged by a fantastic group of young people working with an expert in event planning. All position will be paid at least LLW.

Alex Shipman - Statement

The inspiration behind the company is firstly from my experience with education. I went to experimental schools as well as standard education until finally I was homeschooled, I believe education should be fluid and adaptable to what the person requires instead of pigeon holing them into what is seen as standard. Secondly, it comes from working and teaching in film, I didn't have any family in the film industry and didn't have good enough grades to go to university, so worked my way up from the bottom, learning on the job. The film industry can be amazing but it is also very tough to navigate. Hearing the struggles my students had, being thrown straight on to a large set might not be the best thing for everyone and I started to think about how much I loved being a runner on small indie films when I started out . Therefor, I wanted to create a space which gives young people a chance to grow and gain confidence before entering the wider industry. I also want to champion independent cinema and extermination through film, trying to push the limitations that small budgets put on your to make something different.

When I finished my first feature documentary, which I started when I was 19, I felt the most overwhelming amount of pride, it wasn't perfect and none of us knew what we were doing but we stuck with it and accomplished something. I would like to give that feeling to other people.
